Who didn’t have a piggy bank when they were little? Most importantly, who has one now? Well, let’s continue giving advice on how to fill it.
Some tricks were left pending on out last blog on how to save on utilities, food, entertainments, clothing, and taxes in order to fill the much-mentioned emergency reserve. So?
UTILITIES: You have to separates the utilities between those paid for consumption and those that are not.
Those that pay for consumption (electricity, water, and/or gas) can lower their bills through savings. Use energy-efficient lighting (LEDs), turn off unnecessary lights, change the temperature of your A/C, and get energy-efficient equipment. You can slo check, repair, or replace you windows and doors to ensure your home is airtight. Check for possible leaks and take actions. Once this is done, you will be surprised with how much money you are now saving.
With other services (internet, telephone, and television) check if the package is more than what you need. For example, do you watch all the channels on your current cable package? Removing some can lower the bill. Do you need the highest internet seed in your home? Maybe not. On the phone, do you have packages for messages or international calls that you never use?
You can also switch to another company for a better offer, or tell your current provider that you will switch companies if they do not lower your bill. You will see that almost always, in order to keep you as a customer, these non-essential service companies will give you discounts.
FOOD: Learn to cook! Living in the second city in the nation with more restaurants per capita makes it very attractive to eat out almost all the time. Especially if you never learned to cook. And although it is very attractive to eat out and save the time cooking, your pocket is the ones that suffers the most. That’s hundreds of dollars you can save if you put aside culinary laziness.
Next month, we will focus on the three points we have left: FUN, CLOTHES, and TAXES.
